Frequently Asked Questions

About Our Testing Solutions

What are TrueAssay testing solutions?

TrueAssay testing solutions are professional-grade acid-based reagents used to determine the purity and authenticity of precious metals including gold, silver, and platinum. Each solution is formulated to react differently based on the karat or purity of the metal being tested.

How do acid testing solutions work?

Simply rub your metal item on our testing stone to leave a streak, then apply a drop of the appropriate testing solution. The color of the reaction indicates the purity level. For example, if you apply 14K solution and the streak remains, your gold is at least 14 karat.

Are the testing solutions safe to use?

Our solutions contain acids and should be handled with care. Always use in a well-ventilated area, avoid contact with skin and eyes, and keep away from children. Refer to our Safety Data Sheets for detailed handling instructions.

How many tests can I get from one bottle?

Each bottle provides dozens to hundreds of tests depending on the size: Economy (30-40 drops), Small (150-200 drops), Medium (300-400 drops), Large (400-550 drops), and Extra Large (700-900 drops).

Product Questions

Which testing kit should I buy?

If you primarily test gold jewelry, our 10K/14K/18K solution set is a great starting point. For comprehensive testing including silver and platinum, consider our Complete or Professional kits. If you need to test high-karat gold (20K+), add our 20K and 22K solutions.

Do I need a testing stone?

Yes, a testing stone is essential for acid testing. You rub your item on the stone to create a streak, then apply the solution to the streak. Some of our kits include a testing stone, or you can purchase one separately.

What is the neodymium magnet used for?

Our neodymium rare earth magnet helps detect base metals like iron, steel, and nickel in items claimed to be precious metals. Real gold, silver, and platinum are not magnetic. However, some counterfeit items use non-magnetic metals, so we recommend pairing the magnet test with acid testing for complete verification.
